We are changing the way we plan and deliver care

Nationally, there is an improvement drive that will see greater involvement from service users. In new guidance NHS England said every adult accessing community-based care should co-produce a holistic personalised care and support plan from 2022. They should also be provided with the name of a key worker they can contact if their needs change.

BEH is proud to be part of this improvement journey and is changing the way that care is planned and delivered at Barnet, Enfield and Haringey NHS Mental Health Trust.

The new care planning approach, called DIALOG+, makes it much easier to co-produce a personalised care and support plan with people, and will replace the Care Programme Approach (CPA). Research shows DIALOG+ significantly improves quality of life and care experience. The new approach is rolling out gradually across Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust, as part of a London-wide initiative.

We will be telling service users and carers more about this change during the next few months and community teams are reviewing all cases to make sure everyone has a named key worker as part of the transition.

What are DIALOG and DIALOG+?

DIALOG+ is an easy approach to building a service user’s care plan, focussing on things that are most important to them at the time. DIALOG+ is a full therapeutic intervention. It incorporates the DIALOG scale but goes far beyond administering a scale. It contains eight life domains and three treatment aspects on 1 to 7 points scale.

DIALOG + is the first approach that has been specifically developed to make routine service-user and clinician meetings therapeutically effective. It is based on quality-of-life research, concepts of patient-centred communication, IT developments and components of solution-focused therapy, and is supported by an App. Research studies in different mental health services and multiple countries have shown that using DIALOG+ can improve patients’ quality of life.

You can see more about the research behind DIALOG on our website here.
