New neighbourhood mental health services will be rolled out in Barnet, Enfield and Haringey over the next three years as part of a £25m major expansion of community mental health care across North Central London.

Hundreds of new frontline workers – community workers, occupational therapists, peer workers, population health nurses, psychologists, social workers, specialist doctors and nurses and others – are being recruited to scale up services and provide more timely, personalised and holistic mental health care.

They’ll join new community mental health teams – NHS, social care and voluntary sector experts – to offer comprehensive mental health care and support including assessment, psychological therapies, social prescriptions, physical health checks and social care. They’ll also help with day-to-day challenges that can impact mental health like housing, employment, managing personal finances and social isolation.

“We’re fundamentally changing our approach to mental illness to help you recover sooner and stay well,” said Natalie Fox, Deputy CEO and Chief Operating Officer. “We’re making it easier to get help when you need it by providing more services and support in local communities. Working with health and care partners, we’re transforming care to improve quality of life for thousands in our community.”

The new approach will be implemented initially in five primary care networks – groups of GPs working together to improve health and wellbeing in their neighbourhood. More primary care networks will follow in 2022 and within three years the new approach will be available throughout Barnet, Enfield and Haringey.

Once established, the new community mental health teams will work with residents, health and care colleagues, community organisations and others to develop new neighbourhood services based on local needs.
