Jabu Chikore

2020 is the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife – a chance for us to shine the light on some of the amazing nurses who make up our diverse workforce.

Here Jabu Chikore, Head of Nursing in Barnet tells us more about his job.

What inspired you to become a nurse?

Initially I wanted to be a computer programmer until my mother, who was also a nurse, advised me that I would actually be a very good nurse. She was an inspiration in life and when the opportunity arose to become a nurse I jumped at it. I chose to be a mental health nurse as I thought there won’t be much blood.

What would you say to someone considering a career in nursing?

The job is very fulfilling and there are many avenues one can follow in the career. The job empowers you as well and offers satisfaction that is difficult to match. The joy of knowing you have made a difference is wonderful.

Can you please describe your typical day?

My day starts early usually with a meeting to catch up on events from the previous day.

This is followed by a walk around the wards to talk to staff and discuss concerns and make sure that everyone is well supported, with an emphasis on high quality care. I also engage in discussion with service users during my visits.

My other duties include: telephone support to different teams and offering advice on different issues; discussions on the prevailing matters in the division including recruitment, retention and service development; responding to events as they arise; report writing for different meetings and reading up on changes in practice and procedures.

Throughout the day I also respond to emails and take phone calls.

What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is seeing service users move on from our services as that signals an improvement. It also shows that we made a positive contribution to their life.
