The Ken Porter ward is for people who are aged, generally, between 50 - 60 years admitted for rehab and older adults with enduring mental health problems ranging from 65 years and above who require continuing care.

Visiting Hours:

Monday to Friday 10am to 8pm (protective times 8.30am – 9.45am for breakfast, 12pm to 1pm for Lunch and 5pm – 6pm for supper)

Weekends and Bank holidays 10am – 8pm (please take note of above protective times)

Other visiting times can be arranged with prior agreement from nursing staff.

What We Offer

Ken Porter team aims to provide a high quality service, ensuring that patients and their carers are given the highest standard of care, which is non-judgemental, patient centred and evidence based. We provide longer-term in-patient care for adults who have severe and enduring mental health problems.

Ken Porter Wards aims include:

  • Employing the “Recovery Approach” model of care at Ken Porter, to care and focus on providing individualised care in the least restrictive environment (currently being implemented) as outlined in the National Service Framework (NSF).
  • Our key considerations are high levels of care, whilst maintaining the safety, dignity and privacy of all clients.
  • All care is agreed through the Care Programme Approach (CPA) ensuring that clients’ views are taken into consideration at all times.
  • User involvement has been actively encouraged to help shape the model of care and service that we offer to our clients.
  • Protected time allows patients the opportunity to have dedicated time to engage meaningfully with their named nurse without interruption and protected meal times that our Patients can enjoy their meal times without interruption.
  • Diagnosis, and individualised Care Plan and treatment.
  • Support to access Advocacy and Community Services.
  • A yearly physical health check including dental, optician, chiropody, flu jab, recreational activities, cooking sessions, outing i.e. picnics, theatre, pub outings, birthday celebrations and monthly live music.
  • Activities of daily living assessments and skills
  • Work with a multidisciplinary team based on your assessed needs to support your mental health condition and recovery.

Ken Porter also offers carers and service users a two monthly meeting where both can discuss any issues that appear.

How You Can Access Our Service

External referrers (such as GPs, A&E Doctors, Police Doctors and Service Users/Carers) can refer via the Barnet Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Team. Care Co-coordinators or other internal teams can also refer direct to the HTT who then gate-keep all admissions to hospital.

When an inpatient is ready for discharge this will often be supported by the home treatment team for a period of time. Home treatment team (HTT) provide additional support whilst working alongside the care coordinator, carers and other stakeholders.

Who Is This Service For?

We provide, primarily, a service to the residents of the London Borough of Barnet who are aged, generally, between 50 - 60 years admitted for Rehab and older adults with enduring mental health problems ranging from 65 years and above who require continuing care. 

Associated Services

Ken Porter works closely with other continuing care services within Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health Trust, in order to ensure the highest level of care is provided for each patient.
