Meet Bethany Morgan-Davis from our Forensic Learning Disability Service
Date: 16 June 2020
At Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust we are proud to support Learning Disability Week 2020 which runs from 15-21 June and focuses on the importance of friendships during lockdown.
Meet Bethany Morgan-Davis, Occupational Therapist who works at Forensic Learning Disability Service, North London Forensic Services.
Can you please tell us what you do?
The Forensic Learning Disability service has two wards. Mint ward is medium secure and Moselle is low secure. As Occupational Therapists working on the wards, we support people with learning disabilities through activities they enjoy doing. We facilitate cooking, sports, and arts and crafts groups. We focus on communication skills and relationships. Our aim is to help people to re-integrate into community living and lead a fulfilling life.
What are you doing to celebrate Learning Disability Week 2020?
To celebrate Learning Disability Week we have developed video work with staff and service-users. We organise training sessions for staff each day this week on learning disability and autism awareness. The service-users are running a ‘cake give away’ in the Trust. As part of Friendship theme of the week, they will ‘take a cake to a mate’ who has been important to them during lockdown. Both wards will hold conversation groups for service-users to speak about their experiences of learning disabilities.
Why do you work with people with learning disability?
Working with men with a learning disability in a Forensic service has challenges but it is a very rewarding work. Many of the service-users have found it difficult to engage in meaningful occupations, have positive relationships, and have independence. Such difficulties have led them to the Criminal Justice System. We offer small interventions to enhance their skills that make huge changes in their lives. It is a pleasure to see people grow in their abilities over time looking forward to living rewarding lives supported in the community.
We are proud to support Learning Disability Week. Today we would like to introduce you to Bethany Morgan-Davis, Occupational Therapist who works at Forensic Learning Disability Service, North London Forensic Services.
