Dennis Scott Unit gym opening

It was a family affair when Barnet Mayor Cllr Caroline Stock officially opened an outdoor gym at a local mental health unit yesterday.

In declaring the gym at the Dennis Scott Unit officially open, the Mayor said she had  championed the links between mental and physical health. The unit is based at Barnet Hospital but managed by Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust.

The ceremony took place on the last day that the Mayor’s daughter, Dr Lisanne Stock was working at the unit as she continues her medical training. They were also joined by mayoral consort Richard Stock – who is himself a doctor.

Funds for the gym, at the Dennis Scott Unit run by Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust at Barnet Hospital, were raised by relatives and churchgoers.

Trust chief executive Jinjer Kandola said: “The evidence around the links between physical and mental wellbeing are overwhelming so we very much hope that while this facility will benefit both the patients of the Dennis Scott Unit, it will also be used by hospital staff and local people. With the pleasant summer weather now is the perfect time to give it a go.

“Obviously I’d like to thank all those who raised the funds that made this possible.”

The Worshipful the Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Caroline Stock, said: “I was delighted to officially open the unit’s new outdoor gym. It includes an excellent array of equipment which I have no doubt will prove very beneficial for patients for many years to come.”
