Date: 01 December 2020

Mounir Bassou recognised during the Nurse of the Year

2020 is the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife – a chance for us to shine the light on some of the amazing nurses who make up our diverse workforce.

Here Mounir Bassou, Lead Nurse - Mental Health Service for Older People, Enfield Mental Health tells us what inspired him to become a nurse.

What inspired you to become a nurse?

I initially got into the world of nursing as a Healthcare Assistant (HCA) at a Brain Injury Unit. It was then that I found my calling. It was something that I really took a shine to and wanted to pursue further.  After a few years as a HCA, I was given the opportunity to complete a nursing degree and have not looked back since. I have now been in nursing for over 20 years.

Can you please describe your typical day?

As a Lead Nurse, I now oversee three wards and a large number of staff so no day is like the next. However, it mostly involves meeting with my team leaders, discussions with Clinical Commissioning groups (CCG) / Local Authorities (LA) and planning admissions and discharges to create bed capacity across the wards. I also visit the wards to check on both patients and staff to make sure high standards are maintained.

What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is being able to provide support and re-assurance to my colleagues. In addition to this, working with a wonderful team of people in providing the best level of care for our patients is what we strive towards.

What would you say to someone considering a career in nursing?

The world needs compassion and care. When choosing a career in nursing this is exactly what we can deliver. There are so many pathways in nursing that can be taken, all of which provide both those in our care and us with contentment. I can definitely recommend nursing as a rewarding career.
