Esther Sofela

2020 is the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife – a chance for us to shine the light on some of the amazing nurses who make up our diverse workforce.

Here Esther Sofela, Physical Health Lead Nurse tells us about her typical day.

What inspired you to become a nurse?

Right from the time that I was young, I have always been interested in helping people to function at their optimal level of functioning, irrespective of where they are on the continuum of health. So, when it was time for me to choose a career, nursing seemed to be the natural profession for me to acquire the knowledge and skills to be able to help people in this area of life.

Can you please describe your typical day?

My typical day is very dynamic and busy. It includes the following:

  • Physical health training of frontline staff on mental health wards and within community teams.
  • Advising managers on cardio metabolic assessments and intervention for patients with mental health problems.
  • Supporting staff in delivering physical health care for patients.
  • Building therapeutic partnership for Haringey clients who have mental health illness with the various health institutions.
  • Attending meetings as at when due

What would you say to someone considering a career in nursing?

Nursing is a very fulfilling career. The satisfaction of knowing that you are helping people to cope with their health problems in one way or the other is great. You will also acquire strength to cope with almost every challenge of life in the course of your career as a nurse.

What is the best part of your job?

It’s rewarding to see staff and patients verbalising the positive changes I have made to their day, work, health and life.
